On a scholarship from the Italian Government, he studied physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, Italy. A scholarship from CERN enabled him to work there on the computer-supported determination of cross-sections of proton-induced reactions in the field of spectrometry. He also studied physics at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. He obtained his doctorate in law at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. He completed his doctorate with a dissertation entitled, “Formulating and interpreting patent claims according to European, German and Italian patent law” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult.
