Starting on June 1, 2023, the European patent system will experience a significant change with the entry into force of the Unitary Patent System. The new system will allow proprietors of newly granted European patents to obtain European patents with unitary effect upon request; these are also known as Unitary patents (UPs). Furthermore, the Unified Patent Court (UPC) will become operational from this date forward.
